How to get to Penang National Park

Penang National Park is located at the northwestern tip of Penang Island, facing the Straits of Malacca. It is approximately 475 km from Kuala Lumpur and about 30 km (around 45 minutes) from George Town, Penang. There are two entry points: Teluk Bahang and Kuala Sungai Pinang in Balik Pulau.

By Car:
Main Entrance – Teluk Bahang
Drive via the North-South Expressway, exiting at the Penang Bridge interchange. Follow the road towards Batu Ferringhi and continue on to Teluk Bahang. The journey should take about 30 minutes.

Entrance via Kuala Sungai Pinang
Drive until you reach the Sungai Pinang Police Station. Turn at the junction, then turn left when you see SJKC Yu Chye Chinese School.

By Public Transport:
You can either take a taxi service or board Rapid Penang bus number 101 or 102 from Komtar Bus Terminal or Weld Quay Bus Terminal (Jetty). The bus will stop right outside the entrance to the National Park at Teluk Bahang.

  • Second Entrance (Kuala Sungai Pinang): 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, daily

  • Closed for lunch: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM, daily

Accommodation

Lodging service is concentrated at famous tourist spots – Batu Feringghi and Teluk Bahang. Visitors can also camp at campsite in Penang National Park.

Wildlife Observation
  • Species that can be seen include the Giant Squirrel, Smooth Otter, Lesser Mouse-deer, Pangolin, Python, and various bird species such as the White-bellied Sea Eagle, Ruddy Kingfisher, Oriental Magpie-Robin, and Emerald Dove.
  • There are 51 species of mammals, 174 species of birds, 44 species of reptiles, and 19 species of amphibians recorded.

Jungle Trekking
  • Two main trails starting from the main entrance:
    • 1. Trail to Kerachut Beach – approximately 2 hours’ walk
    • 2. Trail to Teluk Kampi Beach – approximately 3 hours’ walk
  • More than 1,000 plant species have been recorded in Penang National Park, predominantly from the Dipterocarpaceae, Leguminosae, Apocynaceae, Anacardiaceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Moraceae families.
Hill Hiking
  • Hiking to the peak of Batu Hitam Hill
  • Water supply is from rainwater catchment

Muka Head Lighthouse

  • Climb the stairs to the lighthouse for a scenic coastal view
  • The lighthouse is located at an elevation of 227 metres above sea level
Turtle Conservation Centre
  • Visit the Turtle Conservation Centre at Kerachut Beach, managed by the Department of Fisheries
  • Species found here include the Green Turtle and Olive Ridley Turtle
  • Visiting hours are from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Visit to the Meromictic Lake
  • This lake, located at Kerachut Beach, has two water layers with different temperatures and densities — seawater at the bottom (denser) and freshwater on top.
  • There are only two known meromictic lakes in the world experiencing this phenomenon: one in Penang and the other in Australia.
